In The Trenches
Some perspective, please. Go to the Daily Telegraph and enjoy these marvellous drawings by Leonard Smith, who risked his life by creeping into No Man's Land in the First World War to sketch German defences.
At one stage, Smith took detailed sketches of a tree in No Man's Land. Back behind British lines a steel version of the tree was created, and British troops were able to hide within it and eavesdrop on German conversation.
The drawings of this "unsung hero of espionage" have been collected in a new book: More details here.
