You are in:
Heavy Metal Carla
Earlier this year, Carla Bruni shared a stage with the Queen. In a fortnight, the French First Lady will trade the Crown Jewels for a very different form of heavy metal, when she performs on the BBC's Later with Jools Holland show alongside hard rockers Metallica.
According to the Independent, Carla will join in a "jam session" at the beginning of the show, then play some tracks from her new album. While the presence of the First Lady might sit uneasily with headbangers and other assorted rockers, Later... has always strived for eclectic line-ups.
It will be one of Carla's first performances on UK television. In France, Mme Bruni-Sarkozy is now so famous she's addressed simply as "Carla" on front covers; her music has yet to break the British market, though her double act with the Queen in Spring raised her profile.
Not everyone is happy with her appearance on the show. James McMahon, features editor of the New Musical Express magazine (who sounds like he might be 15), told the Indie,
"As somebody who cares deeply about the power of rock and roll, I think it's disgusting. I've always been of the belief that rock and roll is supposed to be anti-authoritarian and about kicking up a fuss, not about cosying up to the establishment."
Sir Paul McCartney will also perform on the show, which is broadcast on September 16.
