The Loneliness Of The Synchronised Swimmer
A wordle is a tool for creating "word clouds" from text. They work by scanning the text, then presenting it in graphic form, giving greater prominence to words which occur more frequently. So a word cloud of an essay or report would be expected to show words repeated often in large font.
The author of the fine blog What I Learned Today put Obama's speech through Wordle.
Looks good.
We did the same, with today's EURSOC lead story on Russia.
Another interesting aspect of the word cloud feature is that it could kill off linear speeches. You don't need to listen to Obama's speech, or read it: Just feed it through Wordle and you'll get a fair idea of what he was going on about.

Also from What I Learned Today, some startling facts about the Chinese synchronised swim team:
"The Dedication of the Synchronized swimmers – While watching synchronized swimming, the announcers described team China’s training: the athletes are removed from their homes at age 12 and are sent to live at the training facility. Their lives revolve around the sport, and they receive education at the facility. The announcer described the story of one athlete who asked for the weekend off. Her coach asked her why she needed the weekend off: Because she hadn’t seen her family in 12 years. “That’s true dedication to her sport, to go that long without seeing her family” gushed the announcer. Dedication?!"
