The Telegraph reports that new Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton is a "WAG" - in other words, the wife or girlfriend of a footballer.
So what? Newspapers are always quick to sneer at footballers and the women who date them - despite plastering these celebs over their covers in the hope of selling more copies. And, indeed, Ms Skelton's WAG credentials are meagre. Her boyfriend David Graham plays for Scottish side Hamilton Academical, who, thanks to having spent a few games shivering on the stands of the old Douglas Park ground in the 1990s, your correspondent can affirm barely qualify as a football team.
Anyway, Ms Skelton is certainly not riding on her boyfriend's fame: She's got what the Telegraph calls a "sound broadcasting background" and a Blue Peter source is keen to stress she is "not dizzy like a lot of the footballers' girlfriends" but is "pretty clued up about shopping."
However, the "source" adds, "She is perfect for Blue Peter - sexy, bubbly and up for anything."
Well, Blue Peter presenters have always been required to be "up for anything", whether it is painting the Forth Bridge or assembling Christmas presents from cardboard and "sticky back plastic." Some - even under the stern gaze of the venerable show's best-loved editor and producer, Biddy Baxter - could have passed for bubbly.
But sexy? Since when has sexiness been in the job description of a children's television presenter?* Good grief.
