Still Smoking In Holland
The smoking ban has come into effect in the Netherlands. But what of Amsterdam's many "coffee shops", where cannabis is a speciality?
The Dutch government has ordered cafés to ensure that only cannabis is smoked indoors: Mixing your weed with tobacco has been banned. 200 inspectors, who can apparently sniff out the difference between a joint packed with marijuana and one illegally blended with baccy of the non-wacky variety will be roaming the canals of the city to ensure the ban in enforced.
Speaking in the Guardian, the head of the nationwide association of coffee shop owners summed up the idiocy of the new measures nicely:
"It's absurd. In other countries they look to see whether you have marijuana in your cigarette, here they'll look to see if you've got cigarette in your marijuana."
