It's Over For Hillary

By

EURSOC Washington correspondent Chris Timmers reports on Barack Obama's nomination.

So, on the evening of 3 June, Barak Obama, now carrying over 2150 delegate votes and needing only 2118 to claim victory and the mantle of leadership as the Democratic Party's nominee for President of the United States, delivered another rousing, thunderously empty speech in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The crowds, as they say, went wild.

But what of Hillary Clinton, the inevitable candidate? The woman for whom the nominating process was to be not so much a contest as it was a coronation? Well, she addressed her supporters, too, thanking them for their support. She said many things, but the one thing she didn't say: I quit.

No, she wants to take this fight to the Democratic convention in Denver in August, reports said.

But why? She's heavily in debt, many in her party are becoming weary of both her and her husband. Clinton-fatigue has set in among even some of the oldest Democratic regulars.

Why? Well, conjecture is that she is hoping to be picked by Obama as his running mate, getting the Vice President slot on the Dems ticket, or if not that, a Supreme Court appointment, or if not that, a major cabinet post. She continues to say, correctly, that over 18 million people voted for her during the course of the primaries and caucuses. While that may be true, it is largely irrelevant. When it came to garnering the most delegate votes, the only measure that really mattered, Obama had her beaten cold.

Reality, set in however. By Thursday evening, her campaign was saying Mrs Clinton was stepping out of the race and backing Obama. She still hasn't admitted she lost, though. Is she hoping to become Mr Obama's running mate?

This nose bleed that won't go away will be with us in US politics for sometime. And probably back for a reprise in 2012.

I can hardly wait.
