Shakira Shakes Her Ass With Number Ten
Blair had Oasis; Brown has Shakira. After launching his premiership with the announcement that he would scorn celebrity endorsements, British PM Gordon Brown is seeking some of Colombian sexpot Shakira's glitterdust. Brown held a conference call with the singer yesterday, when the pair discussed the need for "Universal Education" by 2015.
The singer of "Hips Don't Lie" and "Underneath Your Clothes" praised the British PM afterwards.
"I think he (Brown) is a man with wonderful intentions and who is also very pro-active and who has been working very hard for this issue of education."
"I applaud his work and applaud the fact that he is brave enough to talk to celebrities like me... I think we are all on the same boat trying to get to the same shore, and trying to provide education for all children in the world."
Shakira is a veteran campaigner for children and education in her native Colombia; she is also a UNICEF ambassador (so is Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, but don't let that put you off).
It's the latest celebrity tie-in for Brown, who has managed to get stars both classier and tackier than Tony Blair, who hung out with Bono, Harry Enfield and Oasis star Noel Gallagher in his early days at Number 10. Blair also performed an amusing sketch with comedian Catherine Tate for Comic Relief.
Last week, the PM welcomed George Clooney to Downing Street to discuss Darfur; before that, he took part in a charity stunt for US talent show American Idol, when he pledged £100million ($200m) to combat malaria.
A look at the video below shows that few US game show hosts could beat Gordon Brown for cheesy, forced grins:
Hopefully Shakira, pictured above, put a more convincing smile on his face.
