Sarkozy To Sue Over SMS Claim

President Nicolas Sarkzoy's lawyer says his client never sent a text message to his ex-wife pleading with her to come back to him.

Last week, the website of left-wing news weekly Le Nouvel Observateur claimed that eight days before his marriage to Carla Bruni, Sarkozy sent a text message to former wife Cécilia telling her "If you come back, I'll cancel everything."

Sarkozy has ordered his lawyers to sue the newspaper's website for "falsification, use of false documents and possession of stolen goods".

The President's lawyer, Thierry Herzog, says "this SMS was never sent by the president".

He said that investigators did not have to examine Sarkozy's phone to discover if he had sent the message. Rather, they should check Cécilia's phone, and the absence of such a text would be quickly discovered.

For his part, the editor of the Nouvel Obs website denies falsifying the text message, and said he stood by his sources.

How easy is it to hoax a message like this, or send it from another phone to make it appear as if it emanated from Sarkozy's mobile? It is true that in recent weeks members of the President's family have had their telephone numbers passed among shady characters. In January, two men were arrested and accused of making threats to Sarkozy's ten year old son Louis. One of the pair, who worked for mobile phone network Orange, was able to access the telephone numbers of important clients and passed them to his accomplice, who made the calls.
