The French press has reported that President Nicolas Sarkozy married Carla Bruni this morning in the Elysée Palace.

François Lebel, the Mayor of the arrondisement where the Presidential Palace is based, told French radio that he had married the pair.

"It's the first time in history a President has married during his Presidency," he said, "and the first time a wedding has taken place in the Elysée Palace." He said that the marriage took place in a Salon on the first floor of the building, before twenty witnesses. He spoke of the wedding as "a moment of intimate happiness for the newlyweds."

"The bride wore white", he reported, "and looked ravishing, as usual.

"The husband didn't look too bad either", the Mayor joked.

This is Sarkozy's third wedding - late last year he became the first divorced President after his wife of eleven years Cécilia Ciganer-Albeniz filed for divorce in October.

Sarkozy is 53; his new wife, the supermodel-turned singer Carla Bruni is 40.
