Tinky Winky corrupts more young minds

A senior Polish official has ordered psychologists to investigate whether the popular BBC television programme, Teletubbies, promotes a homosexual lifestyle.

Ewa Sowinska, Poland's spokesperson for children's rights, has singled out Tinky Winky, the purple character with a triangular aerial on his head. "I noticed he was carrying woman's handbag," she says. "At first, I didn't realise he was a boy."

(Tut tut, hasn't she heard of Man Bags?)

According to reports from Warsaw, the evaluation has been initiated. And the office of Ms Sowinska has the power to recommend that Teletubbies should be taken off the air.

Poland's authorities have recently started a series of measures to outlaw what is termed the promotion of homosexuality among the nation's children.

Pity the team of psychologists in the Polish capital, who have been handed the task of evaluating the possible effects of Tinky Winky and his buddies.

A tough job, although, probably, well paid.

This isn't the first time that the Teletubbies, and poor old Tinky Winky in particular, has been singled out by nutters for their supposed homosexuality. Eight years ago the late Reverend Jerry Falwell "outed" Tinky Winky in his National Liberty Journal. The Rev Falwell was clearly more clued-up on the symbolism of gay life than the provincial Poles: He identified Tinky Winky's purple hue as "the gay pride colour" and the triangular aerial on his head as "the gay pride symbol."

He added though that such symbolism amounted to "subtle depictions" of gay life, but ones which nevertheless could "damage the moral lives of children."

Last month the European Union singled out Poland for criticism, in a resolution condemning homophobia in the 27-member bloc.

This year Poland's education ministry announced plans to sack teachers who promote homosexuality.

Who is next in line for admonition ? Perhaps Winnthe Pooh. Don't forget, he had only male friends.
