Prince Harry to serve in Iraq

Thousands of British troops are leaving Iraq, but one very prominent tank commander is going in. The Ministry of Defence announced today that Prince Harry's Blues and Royals regiment will be deployed in Iraq near the southern port of Basra.

Harry, 22, is believed to be set to command a troop of 12 men and four light reconnaissance vehicles in May or June this year.

It is the first time since the Falklands War 25 years ago that such a prominent member of the Royal Family has served on the front lines. Harry's uncle, the Duke of York (Prince Andrew) served as a helicopter pilot during the conflict with Argentina.

It has been reported that Harry, who graduated from Sandhurst military academy last year, was eager to serve in Iraq and had demanded that he receive no special treatment. CNN reports he said last year, "There is no way I am going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country."

Harry's father, Prince Charles, served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. His grandfather, Prince Philip, also served in the Royal Navy. Prince William, Harry's elder brother, is an officer but as second in line to the throne is not eligible for service.

Harry's high profile could make his regiment a target for insurgents in Iraq. However, the prince is thought by some to have demanded to be sent on combat duty to spruce up his image, which recently has become mildly embarrassing for his family thanks to his enjoyment of some of London's swishest nightclubs.
