Band Of Boars
In the UK, it's gangs of drunken youths who rampage through town centres at night destroying property and terrifying locals; The small Bavarian towns of Veitshöchheim and Margetshöchheim have the same problem with wild boar.
This weekend, fifteen of the beasts ran riot through the towns, causing thousands of euros worth of damage, biting shoppers and knocking a cyclist off his bike. Children scampered over walls to avoid the boar, who are thought to have been dodging hunters. At one point, a boar entered a boutique, smashing some stock and causing the sales assistant to flee.
Wild boar can grow up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) long, and weigh 300kg (660 lbs) in some cases.
Police shot three boar and have since faced complaints from boar-loving Germans. A further two were hit by cars, though EURSOC has some experience of boars hitting cars and it is by no means certain that the beast comes off worse. Some animals have been shot in France and found to have fragments of glass from headlights embedded deep in their hides from previous accidents.
The remaining boar made good their escape across a river.
